Belgium coach Marc Wilmots believes Adnan Januzaj can emulate the career path of Kevin de Bruyne at Borussia Dortmund.
Januzaj moved to Dortmund on a one-year loan deal from Manchester United on deadline day.
De Bruyne made a switch to Wolfsburg after failing to impress at Chelsea and he eventually developed into one of the most revered forwards in world football. He is now at Manchester City having completed a big money move over the summer.
Wilmots backed Januzaj to benefit in a similar way during his season away from Old Trafford.
“The step back from Chelsea to Wolfsburg worked wonders for Kevin De Bruyne,” Wilmots said.
“I am convinced that Adnan’s decision to join Dortmund on loan for one season is the right one. It will help him make the next step.
“Januzaj can enjoy a similar development to De Bruyne.
“Adnan can play as a number nine and on both wings. He has an amazing shot. I had never seen someone with such a shooting technique before. He can really hit a ball incredibly powerful from out of nowhere. I have already asked him once whether he has manipulated his shoes or the ball.”
Januzaj firmly established himself as a fans’ favourite at United during a blistering debut season under David Moyes and it is safe to say that supporters are willing him to make a big impact in Germany before returning to Old Trafford. He is still only 20 years old and there is plenty of time for him to develop into a world-class talent.
