Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has warned Manchester United fans that they will have to wait until they see the best of Anthony Martial.
The Frenchman made a blistering start to his Man United career by scoring on his debut against Liverpool and he performed well against PSV Eindhoven last time out.
It has been a promising start for Martial, who has been compared to Thierry Henry since his £36m move to Old Trafford was announced on deadline day.
However, Carragher moved to dampen expectations surrounding Martial by saying he will need time before he fully realises his potential.
“He made a fantastic start to his Old Trafford career with that goal but it’s difficult to judge a player so quickly,” Carragher said.
“It’s very early days and I think Louis van Gaal was right to say he won’t play all the games and will be coming in and out of the team. He played as the central striker against PSV and did okay but he’s a player as much for now as for the future.”
Hopes for Martial have skyrocketed thanks to his goal against Liverpool and the fee United paid for him but Carragher is right in saying that the player must be given time. Louis van Gaal will undoubtedly ensure the 19-year-old does not spend too much time in the limelight and that he keeps his feet on the ground.
