Manchester United midfielder Juan Mata firmly believes Paul Scholes was one of the best midfielders to ever play football.
The Spaniard was naming his best XI to play for Man United and Scholes was an easy choice really wasn’t it because there aren’t many players who can genuinely compare with the ginger magician.
Mata has been heavily involved since the Dutchman took over at the club and has been stellar in a wide-right position but when choosing his best ever United XI, he kept himself firmly out of the side.
When explaining Scholes’ inclusion, Mata said: “He’s one of the best midfielders in the history of football.” Simple and true.
Scholes, who made 718 appearances for the Reds, is used to the accolades he receives, with many footballers agreeing with Mata. The likes of Zinedine Zidane, Xavi and Pep Guardiola have all claimed that Scholes is one of the best players they have seen and it is hard to argue.
Mata will hope to emulate Scholes during his time at Old Trafford. He has been one of United’s most consistent performers since signing for the club and he will hope he can continue to thrive under van Gaal, starting with a trip to Southampton on Sunday.
