Southampton’s Graziano Pelle had put the hosts in front but goals from Anthony Martial either side of half time gave Man United the advantage.
Juan Mata’s strike put United firmly in control and they eventually saw out the three points, although Pelle did claw one back late on.
De Gea praised his teammates, and Martial in particular, after the match.

The contributions of both Martial and De Gea were superb and went a long way to securing the win.
Martial showed supreme composure with both of his goals and they were fantastically taken. His first, in particular, made a mockery of suggestions that the 19-year-old is too inexperienced and raw to make an impact at United. As for De Gea, his save from Jose Fonte’s header with the score at 2-1 was a game-winning moment. Van Gaal will be keen for the duo to maintain their excellent form in the weeks ahead.
