Manchester United’s third goal against Southampton saw the team complete 45 passes in the build-up to the goal.
It’s a goal which will leave a big smile on Louis van Gaal‘s face because it was created through his possession based style of football with patient build-up play.
There has been plenty of criticism aimed towards van Gaal for continuing to make United knock it around with short passes but this is the sort of goal that can be created when it works.
United need to use that as the benchmark going forward because possession is nothing without penetration and they need to make sure they go forward with the possession, instead of just knocking it around aimlessly.

It was a fantastic example of patient build-up play and great passing between the players. That’s what we want to see United, now it’s time to consistently do that going forward.
