Schneiderlin has been left out of the last two starting XI’s by van Gaal which has surprised a lot of Man United fans given that he had started every game prior to that.
Speaking about Schneiderlin, van Gaal said: “For a player from Southampton, it is a big step to move to Manchester United and get used to how we prepare.
“Very few teams play or prepare for matches the way we do. That is a part of the procedure.
“He is doing very well and I expect he shall improve every week. It is not always easy but he is coping with that because he is a thinker. When you think about the game it is easier to cope.
“He has high competition and it is not easy for him, but he has played more than both Carrick and Schweinsteiger.”
Schneiderlin is expected to return to the starting XI for United’s trip to his former club Southampton this afternoon and that will be an emotional experience for the Frenchman.
He spent seven years with Southampton so it is a club which is very much close to his heart but he’ll be heading into the away dressing room today for the first time.
Nobody has any doubts about whether he can perform on a day which will mean more to him than most and so long as he continues the sort of form he’s shown already this season, he’ll be a constant thorn in Southampton’s side.
