Gary Lineker believes Manchester United managing to hold on to David de Gea was the best signing this summer, and we completely agree with him.
Going into the transfer window, keeping De Gea was always our No.1 priority. As a club who intends to compete for trophies in every competition, making sure you’ve got the best players is imperative to that and there was nobody better than De Gea at United over the last two years.
Real Madrid tried their hardest to sign him but fell at the last hurdle, much to the delight of United fans, and De Gea then went on to sign a new four-year contract. It was the stuff of dreams.
While Sergio Romero kept plenty of clean sheets when he played, he never filled fans with any real confidence and that was exposed in the 2-1 loss to Swansea.
De Gea was the signing of the season.

Without De Gea in the side, United would have struggled to compete this year thank to an immovable uncertainty over the goalkeeper which would have loomed large.
With De Gea in the side, United are a completely different force altogether and the 3-2 win over Southampton at the weekend typified that. His six saves were just as important as Anthony Martial‘s two goals.
Over the years, United have had some magnificent goalkeepers in Peter Schmeichel and Edwin van der Sar but they were sandwiched between barren years of uncertainty and constant change. The exit of De Gea would have sparked a similar situation at United this year with Sergio Romero, Victor Valdes and Sam Johnstone but thankfully that never had to materialise.
Kevin De Bruyne, Anthony Martial, Riyad Mahrez and Dimitri Payet could all yet prove to be excellent signings but De Gea is guaranteed to be one of, if not the, best United player this season and Lineker is right to say he’s the best signing this summer.
