U21s: Manchester United 3-1 Everton – Wilson, Lingard and Weir seal win

by Tracey Germaine

Manchester United U21s convincingly beat Everton 3-1 tonight in the second Barclays U21s Premier League fixture of the season. James Weir and Wilson gave United a two goal lead within the opening half hour and Jesse Lingard scored United’s third early in the second half to secure the three points despite a Callum Dyson consolation.

The U21s side was bolstered by the addition of a few first-team squad members for the home game against Everton with Sam Johnstone, Jesse Lingard and James Wilson starting. Meanwhile Everton’s youthful side showed signs of their impending Capital One Cup game against Reading.

Lingard came close to giving the Reds the lead with just six minutes played. Sean Goss picked out Lingard’s run with a ball over the top of the Toffees’ defence. Lingard tried to lift the ball over the oncoming Mateusz Hewelt but ended up lifting it over the crossbar as well.

Shortly afterwards James Weir gave United the lead. Josh Harrop picked out Weir who burst forward and played a neat one-two with Wilson before coolly slotting home past Hewelt with his right foot.

Harrop was soon involved in another goal. This time his challenge on the edge of the Everton penalty area won the ball back for the Reds. He picked out Wilson who saw the space open up for him in front of goal and he finished smartly past Hewelt.

Harrop almost scored himself but his shot at the end of a jinking run in the Blues penalty area was easily blocked. Meanwhile at the other end, Sam Johnstone had a relatively quiet first half and only had to make a handful of comfortable saves.

In the second half, Lingard pounced on the ball in front of an Everton player and curled it past another into the bottom left hand corner.

Everton came more into the match from that point onwards and forced United into more defending. Luckily when they carved out chances that Johnstone was on hand to make the saves.

Harrop had a couple of chances to get on the scoresheet and Weir almost had a brace but no more goals came for United. Everton did bag a consolation goal with 15 minutes remaining.

Callum Dyson claimed a header at the back post, having shaken off Guillermo Varela, but it didn’t spark a comeback for the Blues and the game finished with a comfortable win for United.

The U21s are back in action in just over a month’s time with an away fixture at Sunderland on Monday 26th October.
