Timothy Fosu-Mensah stands out during Manchester United U21s win over Everton

Manchester United’s U21s won 3-1 over Everton on Monday night and although James Wilson, James Weir and Jesse Lingard got on the score-sheet, it was arguably Timothy Fosu-Mensah who stood out.

The 17-year-old Dutchman played in a midfield role and bossed it (see video at the top of the article for highlights). At points, he looked like a man playing among boys and it’s not the first time Fosu-Mensah has put in that sort of performance, not by a long shot.

All last season with the U18s, Fosu-Mensah was one of the star performers and did the same thing when called up to the U19s. Ever since he joined United last summer from Ajax, he has gone from strength to strength and never been at all fazed by a move up in age group.

In recent years there have been a few players at U21s level who stand-out because they find it so easy to play there; Paul Pogba, Adnan Januzaj and James Wilson are three such players. Fosu-Mensah certainly falls into that category.

It’s early doors for Fosu-Mensah but at U18s, U19s and now U21s level, he has continued to shine brighter than those around him and he really does look like a fantastic prospect.

The fact Fosu-Mensah has been accelerated through the age groups is indicative of how well he is doing and if he can continue with this sort of development, he’s surely certain to go on next summer’s pre-season tour.
