Former Liverpool midfielder Jamie Redknapp has praised Manchester United’s Juan Mata after the Spaniard netted the winner against Southampton last weekend.
Mata has been one of Man United’s more consistent performers since he arrived at the club and he has proven to be a crucial part of the squad.
Since Louis van Gaal‘s arrival, Mata has seen his involvement restricted to the right wing for the large part. However, he has taken to the position extremely well and is making that spot his own. Despite being deployed out wide, Mata has still been able to contribute heavily with goals and assists.
Redknapp attested to this in his column for the Daily Mail: “It is excellent for a midfielder — only Robin van Persie (18) and Wayne Rooney (25) have bettered the Spaniard’s 17 strikes for United since he joined in January 2014.
“With the signings made in the summer a lot of people assumed Mata would be the man to lose his place in the starting XI. Right now he’s doing more than enough to justify his place.”
The arrivals of the likes of Memphis Depay and Anthony Martial could have left Mata in the wilderness. His performances, however, have ensured that he retains his place in the side week after week and he is beginning to look undroppable.
Redknapp added: “He must be a dream player to work with. He is a class act, never complains, is such a gifted technical player and with pace around him he can really make United tick. He’s the thinking man’s footballer.”
The 27-year-old has quickly become a fans’ favourite at Old Trafford. Mata is always quick to interact with supporters of the club, whether it be through his personal blog or his YouTube channel. His displays since joining United have also upped his billing and fans will be hoping he is around for a long time to come.
