Arsene Wenger explains why he didn’t sign Anthony Martial

Arsene Wenger has explained that he was never interested in signing Anthony Martial because he felt Arsenal were well covered in his position.

In only 105 minutes of Premier League action, Martial has scored more Premier League goals than any Arsenal player so far this season but Wenger didn’t feel like that was his natural position.

Instead, Wenger was happy to continue with his own options including Joel Campbell on the wing.

“We [have] known him since he was a kid,” he said.

“But he’s more of a winger-type.

“He’s an exceptional talent I agree with you but I believe that he plays in positions where we have players like Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Alexis Sanchez and Joel Campbell who can play in the position.”

Are there any players who Wenger couldn’t have signed? He’s talked about Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and Zlatan Ibrahimovic in the past and now Martial. Good job, Arsene.

To be fair, there’s not a chance Wenger would have paid the £36m fee for Martial but, then again, Arsenal wouldn’t have had the United tax of at least £10m which is added onto the price of any player.

Reports, opposition fans and other clubs scoffed when United paid such a big price for Martial but the more he plays, the quicker he is making that fee look justified.
