Marouane Fellaini happy to play anywhere but says his best position is midfield

Marouane Fellaini has said he is happy to play wherever Louis van Gaal asks him to but insists his best position is in midfield.

The Belgian has been used mainly as a striker by van Gaal this season and although there were points last year where he was useful in that role, it hasn’t worked out that way yet this season.

When he joined Man United, Fellaini said his favoured position was as a defensive midfielder and in an interview with Bleacher Report, he reiterated that his preferred role lay in midfield.

“When the manager asks me to play somewhere, I play there,” he said.

“But my best position is midfield.”

We agree with you Marouane – you shouldn’t be used as a striker. When it comes towards the end of a game and United have run out of ideas, then knocking it long to Fellaini is a good plan B to have.

However, using Fellaini regularly in the striker position just doesn’t work. He isn’t dynamic enough and Anthony Martial has shown in his three performances so far that he’s more than capable of holding the ball up in attack and has more to his overall game.

Fellaini’s limited ability when it comes to possession play and intricate football means he won’t ever be an Ander Herrera-type midfielder but if he is used correctly to his strengths, Fellaini can be a real asset in midfield.
