Guillermo Varela could make Manchester United debut tonight against Ipswich Town

Guillermo Varela could make his Manchester United debut tonight against Ipswich Town, a full two years after he joined the club from Uruguayan club Penarol.

With Luke Shaw, Marcos Rojo, Paddy McNair and Phil Jones all unavailable to start against Ipswich, Louis van Gaal doesn’t have many options in defence which is why Varela could be given an opportunity he has had to wait a long time for.

Last season, Varela spent a year on loan at Real Madrid’s Castilla B side and Zinedine Zidane said he saw a bright future for the youngster, so he must have made a good impression out there.

However, despite training with the first-team earlier this season, Varela has only been given time with United’s U21s. Naturally, he plays at right-back but like Matteo Darmian, he does have the ability to play on the left as well,

This season, he showed his prowess going forward by scoring a wonderful goal with the U21s and adding to the attack was one thing which Shaw did so well, so whoever does replace him tonight will have to do much of the same.

Ashley Young is our preferred candidate to start, as we explained here, but the Capital One Cup is the tournament where van Gaal is likely to play his youngsters and give players the opportunity to impress. So, if Varela is to play this year, a home game against Ipswich Town is surely the perfect opportunity for that to happen.
