The Frenchman has often been linked with a move to Man United during his time at Real Madrid, including this summer. Reports suggested that the club had made enquiries about bringing Varane to Old Trafford but the deal failed to materialise, with Madrid unwilling to sell.
However, Ferguson has now revealed that he was interested in signing the 22-year-old in 2011, before Varane went to Spain.
In his new book, Leading, Ferguson said: “In 2011 I hurtled down to Lille. Zinedine Zidane got wind of this and somehow scooped him up for Real Madrid.”
Varane was only 17 at the time and Ferguson’s eye for talent meant United were already looking into the possibility of signing the centre-back.
The former Lille player has turned into an extremely impressive central defender, starting for both club and country this season.
United fans would have been delighted to see Varane make his way to Old Trafford. The youngster is showing all signs of turning into a top-class centre-half and, at just 22, has huge promise for the future. Instead, supporters will have to look at him as just another one of those players that got away from United, despite Ferguson’s best efforts.
