Both players completed the full 90 minutes for Man United’s U21s in their 3-1 win over Everton on Monday and it seems neither player is going to play any part in the Capital One Cup tie as a consequence.
Speaking about Wilson and Lingard, van Gaal said: “I don’t need them so they can have a day off and then Thursday they will be fresh and can train.”
Wilson was in great form the U21s with a goal and an assist, and Lingard also got himself on the score-sheet but it was not enough to earn them an opportunity with the first-team by the looks of it.
We’re extremely confused by the Wilson situation. One second van Gaal says he is going to join a Championship club on loan, the next he says he will not sell him because he believes in him but soon after he plays for the U21s and is overlooked a senior game which many considered the right opportunity for him.
Either let Wilson leave on loan or give him chances. Doing neither is madness.
As for Lingard who is now 22, you have to imagine that this could be his last year at the club unless he is given the right chances but, at this moment in time, that looks unlikely.
