Manchester United keeper David de Gea has revealed he was “proud” to wear the captain’s armband in the 3-0 win over Ipswich Town on Wednesday night.
De Gea was given the armband by Bastian Schweinsteiger after Wayne Rooney was substituted late on.
It was a symbolic moment for the Spaniard, who signed a new contract at Old Trafford earlier this month having failed to secure a transfer to Real Madrid.
De Gea was delighted to receive the honour and let his feelings be known:
Great win yesterday! Let's think about our next rivals and keep improving. I'm proud to wear this armband! #MUFC pic.twitter.com/gduqspyh4a

De Gea clearly wanted to join Madrid but perhaps moments such as the one against Ipswich may persuade him that his long-term future lies at Old Trafford.
Any doubts that supporters had over his focus following the failed transfer have been dismissed thanks to a number of fine performances from the keeper since his return to the starting XI. De Gea will look to continue his good form against Sunderland this weekend.
