Manchester United’s Chris Smalling: There is ‘definitely more to come’

by Ben Topliss

Chelsea have sounded out Manchester United’s Victor Valdes as a potential replacement for Asmir Begovic should the Bosnian get injured this season, according to the Daily Mail.

Begovic is Chelsea’s only fit senior goalkeeper as first-choice Thibaut Courtois is currently sidelined with a long-term knee injury.

21-year-old rookie Jamal Blackman is the only other keeper in Chelsea’s ranks and Jose Mourinho has drawn up a shortlist should the worst happen and Begovic suffers an injury.

Valdes is the surprise name on that list, although Inter Milan’s Juan Pablo Carrizo, Atletico Madrid’s Miguel Angel Moya and Porto’s Helton are all on it too.

Chelsea would, however, require clearance from the Premier League to make an emergency signing outside of the transfer window.

Valdes is in the wilderness at United having fallen out with Louis van Gaal. The Spaniard reportedly refused to play for the U21s last term.

Although it doesn’t look like Valdes will feature for the first-team anytime soon, it is unlikely that van Gaal will allow him to go and strengthen a direct Premier League rival. Unfortunately for Chelsea, Mourinho will have to look elsewhere.
