Louis van Gaal confirms Marcos Rojo will miss Manchester United’s game against Sunderland

Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal has been left with a defensive headache ahead of the game against Sunderland this weekend after the Dutchman confirmed Marcos Rojo will not be fit in time for the clash.

Rojo, who was earmarked as the replacement for the stricken Luke Shaw, missed the 3-0 victory over Ipswich Town in the Capital One Cup on Wednesday due to a hamstring injury.

Paddy McNair is also injured and Phil Jones isn’t quite 100% so van Gaal was forced to use Ashley Young at left-back against Ipswich.

When asked if Rojo would be fit to face Sunderland, van Gaal said: “No. The left-footed players, Luke Shaw and Marcos Rojo, are injured, so I have a problem.

“I have changed every player except a left-footed player so Daley Blind has played all the minutes (this season). [Chris] Smalling had also played all the minutes and because of that I (substituted) him (against Ipswich) and brought [Phil] Jones in.

“We have to spare players and Smalling and (Juan) Mata has played all the minutes, but I cannot spare Blind because all the left-footed players are injured.”

Rojo’s start to the season has been far from smooth. The Argentine reportedly infuriated van Gaal by missing the pre-season tour of the United States, meaning he sat out a number of United’s opening fixtures. Rojo’s injury will likely annoy van Gaal further. He really needs to get a good run under his belt in order to establish match rhythm.
