Ipswich Town manager Mick McCarthy: ‘Manchester United deserved to win’

by Sid Choudhary

Ipswich Town manager Mick McCarthy has admitted that his side deserved to lose to Manchester United in the Capital One Cup.

Man United barely had to get out of second gear to record a comfortable 3-0 win on Wednesday and their progress to the fourth round of the competition was never in doubt.

Ipswich did not manage a single shot on goal in the 90 minutes, as United were thoroughly dominant.

They eventually secured the win with goals from Wayne Rooney, Andreas Pereira and Anthony Martial.

“Manchester United deserved to win. But I am delighted with my players. I could have put any team out against that team and probably still would have been beaten,” McCarthy said.

Both teams made a host of changes from the lineups that played in their respective leagues at the weekend but United’s strength in depth shone through. Pereira was easily the best player on the pitch on his Old Trafford debut, proving that Louis van Gaal has a strong squad for the remainder of the season.

United will face Middlesbrough in the next round and, after two consecutive trophy-less seasons, fans can rest assured that van Gaal will want the chance to lift the League Cup at Wembley come February.
