Sunderland manager Dick Advocaat has praised Louis van Gaal ahead of his trip to Old Trafford.
The Black Cats come to Old Trafford looking to record their first win of the season in their seventh game but they will know they have their work cut out for them.
Advocaat knows all about his Dutch counterpart van Gaal and is looking forward to taking on someone he rates ‘very highly.’ The manager has fond memories of facing Manchester United from his time at Zenit St. Petersburg.
Advocaat told the Independent: “When I was coach at Zenit St Petersburg, we beat them in the Super Cup in Monaco.
“I had a great conversation with Sir Alex Ferguson before the game. Like me, he is a Rangers man and told me a funny story.
“But he wasn’t laughing after the game because I beat him! Louis is one of the best coaches of the world.”
Van Gaal has a good reputation amongst other managers. His exploits with both Ajax and Barcelona have brought him great recognition and he now has the chance to leave a lasting legacy at Man United as well.
Advocaat continued: “He has worked at the highest levels in Europe. He is a manager who does not just look for the easy way, he is always looking for the most difficult way. If you see his prize list it is unbelievable. So I rate him very highly.”
The two managers have had contrasting starts to this season. After Advocaat decided not to retire in the summer, his Sunderland side have struggled and are yet to win a game this campaign. Van Gaal, on the other hand, has United in second place, just two points off Manchester City at the top of the table.
Sunderland and Advocaat will come into Saturday’s game as huge underdogs and the fans at Old Trafford will be hoping that the Black Cats don’t record one of the biggest upsets of the season.
