Brazilian striker Alexandre Pato has claimed that Manchester United tried to sign him before the end of the transfer window this summer.
Man United were linked with a whole host of strikers this summer and Pato’s was a name that seemed to pop up more frequently towards the end of the window. However, Louis van Gaal chose to secure the services of Anthony Martial instead and the Frenchman has got off to a good start at Old Trafford.
Pato was touted to be the next big thing to come out of Brazilian football but injuries and poor career decisions have hampered his development.
He currently plies his trade for Sao Paulo and is still involved in the national team set up.
The 26-year-old revealed that United made a move for him on deadline day. He said: ”I received an offer from Manchester United two hours before the transfer window closed, but I was only told that afterwards. My focus is now here.
Pato was also heavily linked with Tottenham Hotspur throughout the transfer window and the Brazil international admits that a move could still happen in future.
“I won’t lie, of course I’m thinking (about the future). I talk about this with my family, people close to me. We talk about what’s going to happen, where will I be next year,” he added.
“We are a few months short from the end of the season. But I’m working hard, focused on Sao Paulo. I won’t stop wondering about the future, but I’m focused on Sao Paulo. If I could choose, I would like to stay at Sao Paulo at the moment, but it doesn’t depend on me only.”
Pato made his impact in Europe during his time at AC Milan. The striker showed lots of promise while in Italy, before a move to Corinthians scuppered his high hopes.
He still shows glimpses of his past self while playing in Brazil but Pato has not turned into the player many thought he would. United may have dodged a bullet by not signing the centre-forward, especially given Martial’s fast start to life at Old Trafford.
