Confirmed starting XI: Manchester United vs Sunderland

by Ben Topliss

Manchester United: De Gea; Valencia, Smalling, Blind, Darmian; Schneiderlin, Carrick; Mata, Rooney, Memphis; Martial

Subs: Romero, Jones, Herrera, Schweinsteiger, Pereira, Young, Fellaini

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has named an attacking lineup for the game against Sunderland this afternoon.

Anthony Martial, who could become the first United player to score in his first three Premier League matches today, continues up top, with Wayne Rooney behind him.

Michael Carrick and Morgan Schneiderlin will operate in the middle of the park, meaning Bastian Schweinsteiger drops to the substitute’s bench.

There is also no place for Ander Herrera or Andreas Pereira, who scored in the midweek victory over Ipswich Town. Meanwhile, Matteo Darmian starts at left-back with Antonio Valencia on the right. It is a strong XI and one that should be more than capable of beating the league’s bottom side. However, van Gaal will undoubtedly warn his players against complacency.
