Memphis Depay opened the scoring for Man United in the final of four minutes of stoppage time in the first half after Sunderland had spent a lot of the first period trying to waste time. Costel Pantilimon, in goal for Sunderland, was especially at fault, as he seemed to take an age with the majority of his goal kicks.
It was the least United deserved after dominating the first half and it was obvious Sunderland were looking for a draw from the start of the game.
LvG on Depay goal: "I was very happy with the goal in extra-time because they punished themselves. They were always wasting time." #MUFC

Memphis’ goal helped open the floodgates for United and proved to be a huge turning point, after Rooney doubled the lead less than a minute into the second half. Van Gaal’s men started to play with much more freedom and supporters enjoyed a much more exciting second half performance. It was the sort of display that made United seem like they are really getting to their best and the manager has found the ideal system.
Van Gaal will hope that his side can continue their good form with two crucial games coming up in the next eight days. Having scored nine goals in their last three games, United are beginning to look the part and could be ready to challenge for silverware on all fronts.
