Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has expressed his joy after striker James Wilson signed a new contract with the club.

Wilson was into the last year of his current deal but chose to sign on, keeping him at the club until at least 2019. The youngster already has many admirers and the news of his new contract delighted the fans and van Gaal.

Despite not selecting him for the first-team yet this campaign, van Gaal is optimistic about Wilson’s future at the club.

The manager placed his faith in the 19-year-old last season giving him a handful of appearances, but will want to further his development.

Speaking about the deal, van Gaal said: “James is one of the brightest young English prospects and we are delighted he has signed a new contract. He is a very talented forward player and has a keen eye for goal.”

Wilson’s blistering pace makes him a treat to watch at any level. He has proven his ability throughout the different age groups he has played in since joining the club aged just seven. Van Gaal is confident that the Englishman can go on to bigger and better things.

He added: “His development is continuing in the right direction and it is clear to see that he has a fine future ahead of him.”

Wilson will be hoping that now he has signed a new contract, he can turn his focus to regaining his place in the first-team squad.

Since the arrival of Anthony Martial, the striker has found opportunities few and far between. However, there is no denying his ability and if he continues to impress, like he did for the U21’s against Everton on Monday, it will only be a matter of time before he finds himself back on the biggest stage.
