Manchester United manager has branded Robert Lewandowski’s goalscoring exploits for Bayern Munich as “extraordinary”.
Lewandowski scored five goals in the space of nine minutes last week as Bayern cruised to a 5-1 victory over Man United’s next opponents, Wolfsburg.
Wolfsburg travel to Old Trafford on Wednesday in the Champions League and United will be looking for their first win in the competition this season. Ahead of the game, van Gaal took note of Wolfsburg’s impressive first half against Bayern a week ago.
“Of course I saw, but I see also the first half and Wolfsburg were very strong. It is unbelievable that it happens in nine minutes,” van Gaal said.
“I have seen it when I was at Barcelona and we play Valencia and we lost 3-4 having been leading 3-0, but that was in 15 minutes. A little bit less than the five in nine minutes!”
Van Gaal will be wary of a backlash from Wolfsburg in a huge Champions League match. Anything but a win against the Germans will leave United with an uphill battle to qualify for the knockout round of the competition, something the club can ill afford.
With United in good form going into the clash, van Gaal will be confident his side can get one over their opponents. Nine goals in three games means United have started to find their attacking groove and they could be ready to hit top form on Wednesday night.
