Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney has denied submitting a transfer request at the club in 2013.
Sir Alex Ferguson claimed that Rooney had asked to leave Man United shortly before the Scot retired in May 2013.
The shock news came after Rooney had previously asked to leave Old Trafford in October 2010 before agreeing a new deal.
The likes of Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain were reportedly interested in the Englishman but he insisted he never formally asked to leave.
“I went in to see him [Ferguson] and just said, ‘If you are not going to play me, it might be better for me to move on’,” Rooney said in a new BBC documentary.
“Then, all of a sudden, it was all over the press that I had put a transfer request in, which I never did. I don’t know what happened and why that came out that way.”
Some supporters have never forgiven Rooney for the alleged transfer requests and it is unlikely that their stance will be changed despite the player’s comments. His poor start to the season has done little to help his situation with the dissenting section of United’s fanbase, although he did score twice last week in wins over Ipswich Town and Sunderland.
