Manchester United defender Chris Smalling is happy with the start that his side have made to the season.
Louis van Gaal‘s men are top of the Premier League table and are really starting to find their groove. After defeating Sunderland on Saturday, Man United topped the league for the first time in over two years and Smalling has been delighted with the improvement shown.
Last season, United struggled immensely at the start of the campaign, with losses to the likes of Swansea City and Leicester City.
They have turned their fortunes around this year and are starting to show signs of being able to challenge on all fronts.
Asked about how the side are doing, Smalling said: “We have improved. Last season’s start was disastrous and it didn’t give us a foothold to be able to challenge for anything.
“We know that we have improved in this section of the season, and we now have to improve in each other section compared to last season and aim a lot higher.”
After a respectable fourth place finish in the league last campaign, there was huge pressure on United to better their performances and the Englishman has been content with the start.
He added: “Last season’s start was disastrous and it didn’t give us a foothold to be able to challenge for anything.
“Our aim is to be competitive in all of the competitions and to make sure that we finish higher in the Premier League than we did last season. If we keep this consistent run from the start, and can maintain that all the way through, then I don’t think anything is out of reach.
“If you show that consistency then you will always be there or thereabouts. If you’re near the top by Christmas, you then want a strong finish and a bit of luck on your side as well.”
Smalling will be a key player for United if they are to be in the hunt for silverware by the end of the season. His performances at centre-back have been outstanding so far this season and he has proved to be one of the side’s most consistent players.
His leadership and commanding nature at the back have been crucial to United this season. The defence has looked solid and Smalling’s partnership with Daley Blind is definitely promising. The pair will hope to keep impressing and help their team to continue to improve over the coming months.
