Louis van Gaal: Ashley Young’s versatility is ‘important’ for Manchester United

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal believes Ashley Young’s versatility is “important” for the team.

Young played at right-back in the 2-1 victory over Wolfsburg on Wednesday night after replacing Antonio Valencia at half-time.

The Englishman has now played in both full-back positions under van Gaal as well as on the wing.

Van Gaal praised Young’s “fantastic” attitude when it comes to adapting to new positions.

“It was important he played there in the second half – I’m very happy,” van Gaal said.

“He can play in a lot of positions and for a manager it is fantastic that he is willing to do that. He accepts his role and that’s important.”

Van Gaal has proven during his time in charge at Old Trafford that he likes his players to be multi-functional and Young has certainly ticked the box in that respect. The 30-year-old made his name as a quick forward but he has never complained about being moved around at United. Young will be hoping to keep his place in the side for the game against Arsenal this weekend.
