Manchester United striker Anthony Martial thanked the home fans after he made his first European appearance at Old Trafford.
The Frenchman started up front as Man United overcame Wolfsburg 2-1 in a crucial Champions League tie. Martial kept his place in the side following a brilliant performance against Sunderland on the weekend and once again lead the line with precision for the Reds.
The 19-year-old was a constant threat, attempting to get in behind the Wolfsburg back four on countless occasions. He showed signs of linking up well with Juan Mata, as the pair interchanged positions with ease. The seamlessness between the two nearly resulted in a goal, after some great work on the right wing from Martial resulted in him squaring a fantastic pass to Wayne Rooney, who could only fire over the bar.
There was no goal for the youngster today but, once again, he showed exactly what he is all about. Up against a brilliant central defender in Dante, Martial held the ball up superbly despite the attention of the Brazilian centre-half. His work rate up front allowed United to move forward as a team and got the rest of the front four involved a lot more.
Martial was not expected to play such a big role for United this season, following his deadline day move from Monaco. However, his start to life at Old Trafford has seen him become one of the Reds most important players, already, and he will be hoping to keep his place against Arsenal on Sunday.
The centre forward already has three Premier League goals to his name and will want to add to that tally at the Emirates Stadium. Even if he doesn’t, another showing like the one against Wolfsburg will definitely help the team in their quest to stay top of the league.
