The German side took the lead in the fourth minute following some calamitous defending by Man United but Mata then turned on the style to help his side secure a come from behind win.
The Spaniard won a penalty and duly converted to level things up and get United back on track before half-time and after emerging for the second period, Mata played an impeccable back-heeled pass to Chris Smalling, who scored the winner.
It was a moment of brilliance from the 27-year-old that separated the two sides at full-time and his skipper is delighted with the form Mata is in.
Rooney’s struggles continued, however. The skipper had a brilliant chance to equalise for United after some work from Anthony Martial down the right-hand side. The youngster squared to Rooney who had a largely open goal facing him. The England captain got under the ball and spooned a relatively simple chance over the crossbar. It was typical of the 29-year-old’s season so far, as Rooney’s troubles in front of goal didn’t abide in Europe.
The miss didn’t cost the team though and the former Everton man will be delighted that his side have got their Champions League campaign back on track. Despite his poor form, Rooney will be looking forward to traveling to London to take on Arsenal in the league on Sunday.
Rooney has a brilliant scoring record against the Gunners and will hope that a goal at the Emirates Stadium can kickstart his season. With United sitting on top of the Premier League table, a win would be a huge step towards opening up a gap between the Reds and their title rivals and Rooney will definitely want a part to play in that.
