Phil Jones was brought on in place of Schweinsteiger, while Daley Blind moved into midfield in a switch that raised a lot of eyebrows. After the departure of the German, Man United struggled to hold onto the ball and found themselves under pressure to hold on to all three points.
When he was on the pitch, Schweinsteiger was imperious as he dictated United’s play from midfield and ensured the team kept going forward in their search for a win.
“If you are leaving the pitch again and working part-time, it can irritate at times. Therefore it’s probably a normal response. You have to show that you are unhappy sometimes.”
Schweinsteiger was evidently disappointed on the substitute’s bench after coming off. Playing against an old rival from his time in Germany, the 31-year-old was hugely impressive in United’s midfield and there was an obvious drop in performance when he left the pitch.
However, van Gaal revealed after the game that he felt Schweinsteiger was beginning to tire. The World Cup winner has been working his way to full match fitness, completing full games for both club and country this season. His dominant performance could have taken its toll and with Arsenal next up for United, van Gaal’s decision to bring him off could prove to be a stroke of genius.
