Arsenal midfielder Mesut Ozil believes his side have a point to prove against Manchester United.
The Gunners go into the match already three points behind Man United, who lead the Premier League, and are coming off the back of a home defeat to Olympiakos in Europe.
A loss to United would leave Arsenal six points off the pace and even at such an early stage of the season, it could prove to be an insurmountable difference.
“The anticipation and the expectation is obviously big,” Ozil said.
“We just want to prove ourselves and get the three points. When you prove yourself against big teams, your self-belief increases because you believe in yourself more.”
Arsenal have struggled in big games recently, barring a win over Manchester City last season. They were unfortunate to lose to Chelsea after having to play the second half of the game a man light, something Ozil thinks they can ill afford again.
He added: ”If you look at our team, in the last few weeks we’ve been weakened by red cards. But if we can prevent that, I’m convinced that we can do well against big teams. We’ll show that against Manchester United.”
United will go into the game full of confidence, having won four games in a row in all competitions. There will still be 30 games left in the Premier League after the two face off at the Emirates but it is a real chance for one team to lay down a gauntlet. A win for United could hugely aid their quest for silverware and keep them top of the pile going into the international break.
