AS Monaco vice-president Vadim Vasilyev has revealed the French club received a bigger offer the French youngster than Manchester United’s but said Martial only wanted to move to Old Trafford.
The 19-year-old has settled down well at Man United straight away and quickly made himself one of louis van Gaal‘s most important players in a very short space of time.
At the time, United’s offer of around €50m was considered ridiculous but Vasilyev admits there was another offer on the table which beat United’s, yet Martial’s desire to play for us drove his move to Manchester instead.
Speaking about Martial, Vasilyev said: “There was another club that offered even more than United.
“I will not say how much, but the fixed price, without variables, it was even better. And also they offered us to have him for a further year in Monaco. But the boy wanted to go to Manchester, it was his dream. And we let him go with the bonus of 30 million. Had it not been for so much money, he’d have stayed.”
Just when you think Martial couldn’t have a stronger start to life at United, we find out he rejected a bigger move simply because he wanted to play for the club. Fans will love that.
You shouldn’t underestimate how important it is for a player to want to play for a club. Take a look a Bastian Schweinsteiger and Angel di Maria for contrasting examples in regards to that; on the one hand with Di Maria you had somebody who was thinking about Paris St-Germain all season but on the other you have a player who is genuinely loving playing for United.
That’s the sort of player you want in your side and the same logic could be applied to Martial. He wants to play for United, he wants to make himself a hero and he is going the right way about it if his early exploits are anything to go by.
