Anthony Martial has revealed that his mum played a key role in his transfer from Monaco to Manchester United.
Louis van Gaal rang the Frenchman this summer before his £36m deadline day move to Old Trafford was confirmed but his mum had to translate due to language issues.
It proved to be an inspired move from van Gaal as Martial has gone from strength to strength since a memorable debut goal against Liverpool.
In an in-depth interview with RMC, Martial explained how his transfer to United came to fruition.
“I really wanted this move, and I especially wanted to carry on in the Champions League and that’s what made my choice,” he said.
“It was very important to show the coach that he could trust me and play me, and by going to Manchester United, I knew they only had Rooney up front and that he preferred to play in the No.10 role, so I knew I’d get my chance and it was up to me to take it.”
“I knew I was going to be second-choice regardless of what happened, and then I got that chance against Liverpool and then the manager gave me another one against PSV.”
When asked if he has spoken with van Gaal prior to his move to United, he said: “Yes, he rang me, he rang my mum who translated it all. Then when I went to Manchester, we talked some more and then it all happened quickly. He’s always behind me, explaining what I’m doing right and what I’m doing wrong and I feel that’s important for a young player of my age to have the manager’s support.”
Martial really seems to have his head on his shoulders considering he is just 19 years old. The striker has made a blistering start to life at United and there are high hopes for what he can achieve. Martial will now be looking to impress while on international duty with the French national side.
