Following comments from Monaco vice-president Vadim Vasilyev, MEN report that it was Chelsea who Martial turned down despite it being worth more money.
At the time of his move, Man United were ridiculed for paying £36m for a 19-year-old but his electric start to life in England has caused plenty of immediate revisionism as he really looks like a star in the making and United are reaping the rewards from a player who really wanted to join them.
“There was another club that offered even more than United,” Vasilyev said last month.
“I will not say how much, but the fixed price, without variables, it was even better. And also they offered us to have him for a further year in Monaco.
“But the boy wanted to go to Manchester, it was his dream. And we let him go with the bonus of €30m. Had it not been for so much money, he’d have stayed.”
The fact Martial rejected a move to Chelsea to join United will no doubt put him even further up in the estimations of fans and rightly so.
As a person – somebody who is clearly humble, grounded and modest – Chelsea would have been the wrong environment for him, in much the same fashion as it didn’t really suit Juan Mata‘s personality either. They prefer players like Diego Costa and John Terry.
Over the years there have been plenty of teenagers who have made a name for themselves at Old Trafford and although Martial is unique in that he has already been transferred for big money, it’s very exciting to be watching the birth of another potential superstar in Manchester.
