Manchester United’s Matteo Darmian is away on international duty with Italy this week.
The right-back put in a really poor performance in a Man United shirt in the 3-0 loss to Arsenal on Sunday. Up against Alexis Sanchez, he was lost at sea and Louis van Gaal decided to take him off at half-time and bring on Antonio Valencia instead.
In that sense, the international break was well timed for Darmian because it will allow him to take a step back from the United bubble and re-focus himself ahead of what is set to be an extremely difficult October.
United’s next three games are against Everton (A), CSKA Moscow (A) and Manchester City (H) which are all very difficult ties, especially the game at home to City. After the embarrassing defeat to Arsenal, van Gaal will want a response from his players and Darmian himself will want to brush off his own poor performance and get back to his best.
Overall, Darmian’s had an excellent start to the season at United and fans are very happy with how he has performed but what the game at the Emirates showed is that he isn’t yet the complete package and does still need to improve.
