Former Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has revealed that the Merseyside club spoke to Memphis Depay before he moved to Manchester United.
Memphis, who had fired PSV Eindhoven to the Eredivisie title, was a player in demand this summer. Tottenham Hotspur and Paris Saint-Germain were also apparently keen on him.
Liverpool were also linked with the Dutchman but the club and Rodgers officially denied that they had ever spoke to him shortly after he signed for Man United.
However, the newly sacked Rodgers has now admitted that Memphis was on Liverpool’s radar.
“PSV had given us permission to have conversations with him,” Rodgers said.
“Apart from a huge talent, he came across as a good boy to me, but Liverpool were looking for a central striker and Memphis, until then, had primarily played as a left winger.”
Memphis has made an indifferent start to his career at United but it is clear for all to see that he is a real talent. While it may be a while until supporters see the best of the youngster at Old Trafford, it will undoubtedly be worth the wait.
