Internationals: Another assist for Martial, brilliant achievement for McNair, injury for Schweinsteiger

by Sam Peoples

Paddy McNair secured Euro 2016 qualification with Northern Ireland after their 3-1 win over Greece.

It is the first time since 1986 that Northern Ireland have qualified for a major international tournament and it’s a fantastic achievement for McNair, who made his full competitive debut tonight at right-back. Well done, Paddy.

With Luke Shaw‘s replacement providing hard to come by, maybe Louis van Gaal will consider using McNair at right-back and Matteo Darmian at left-back.

Anthony Martial came off the bench in France’s 4-0 win over Armenia in a friendly and had a positive impact with an assist for Karim Benzema’s second goal. Morgan Schneiderlin was also used as a substitute and played 30 minutes after he replaced Blaise Matuidi but he still had time to pick up a yellow card.

Bastian Schweinsteiger missed Germany’s 1-0 loss to the Republic of Ireland after suffering an adductor muscle injury in the build-up to the game.

There will now be concerns as far as Manchester United are concerned until the full diagnosis on Schweinsteiger’s injury is revealed. Hopefully it is nothing too serious.
