Manchester United midfielder Antonio Valencia put in a strong performance for his national team as he helped Ecuador to a 2-0 victory over Argentina.
Valencia notched an assist for his side’s second goal when his blistering pace saw him breakthrough the Argentine defence, before squaring to Felipe Caicedo with an inch-perfect pass to double their lead.
The 30-year-old has been in indifferent form for Man United this season, having only been deployed at right-back. Valencia played on the wing for his country and put in the sort of performance United fans had become accustomed to seeing a few years ago.
The former Wigan Athletic man has seen his role at Old Trafford change over the years. He has started to play primarily at right-back and is now nothing more than a bit-part player since the arrival of Matteo Darmian.
However, if Valencia can start replicating the sort of display he put in for Ecuador for his club, he could find himself on the pitch much more often. The Ecuadorian completely outshone his old teammate, Angel Di Maria, and was far and away the best winger on the pitch.
United fans will be encouraged to see Valencia finding some form. Since the injury to Luke Shaw, the midfielder has seen more playing time and it would be a huge boost to the Reds to have him playing like he did when representing his country.
