Danny Blind has played down the argument and said it’s something that simply happens in football.
He said: “It was a discussion during a training about a ball that should have been given over. Something like that happens often.
When further discussing the point, Blind added: “There are sometimes situations in training where players think different. There you are talking about it. That’s what happened and then it was over.”
Regardless of the true cause behind the argument, the fact Memphis and van Persie are arguing in the first place goes to show how tetchy and on-edge the Netherlands players are right now.
With only one game left in their Euro 2016 qualifying group, they need to win and hope Turkey drop points in their remaining match, otherwise they will miss out on a place in the tournament.
For Memphis and Daley Blind, that would be a real body blow to not be involved on the big stage and they will certainly be hoping for Lady Luck to be shining on them this week.
As for the argument with van Persie, it sounds like it could have been over something as petty as a ball for a free-kick but with van Persie currently out of the side, there are questions being asked as to whether he now commands a starting place with Netherlands.
