Former Manchester United midfielder Arnold Muhren believes Memphis Depay is being placed under too much pressure in his early days at Old Trafford.
Memphis joined Man United from PSV Eindhoven in the summer and is yet to hit the heights that many fans were expecting to see.
The 21-year-old has scored just one goal in the Premier League thus far and his performances have been underwhelming.
Memphis came to Old Trafford with a huge reputation after winning the Eredivisie’s Golden Boot award last season. There was talk about him being ‘the new Ronaldo’ and Muhren insisted it was this sort of tag that has been detrimental to Memphis.
“He is a player who can beat people and score goals”, Muhren said.
“But in my opinion, in the last three four weeks he seems lost. If he is not beating people very easily, he is still trying and sometimes you need to look for combination football.”
Memphis has struggled to dominate a full-back in the league yet and really impose himself on a game. Despite this, Muhren feels United fans need to be patient with their new starlet.
He added: “He is only 21; he is in another country, at a bigger club. The fans expect a lot from him, the media expects a lot from him, especially after the way he started. He just needs to be consistent.”
Memphis has struggled for both club and country this season and the pressure does seem to be getting to him. Many players who come to the Premier League have difficulty adapting and the Dutchman is just another one of those. There is no doubting his potential but it will be up to his own hard work to ensure he fulfils it.
