Former Manchester United and Netherlands midfielder Arnold Muhren believes Louis van Gaal is a “great guy”.
Van Gaal has come under fire lately for his treatment of players, most recently about his altercation with goalkeeper Victor Valdes.
Van Gaal brought the Spaniard to the club in January but has since forced him to train with the U21s after a falling out.
Players past and present all have their differing views on van Gaal but Muhren feels that the Dutchman’s personality makes him who he is.
“You should respect the way he is; if van Gaal changed completely, then he won’t be van Gaal anymore,” Muhren said.
“He always had this charisma, the personality but in private he is completely different than he is like in press conferences.”
Van Gaal is famous for his press conferences, where he is quick to question the media and is often quite outspoken. However, Muhren feels that this is a different van Gaal.
He added: “He doesn’t agree most of the time with the questions the press asks, but that is the van Gaal we know. He did the same in Barcelona, in Munich. You either love him or hate him, but I know him as a person or a manager; I think he is a great guy.”
Van Gaal lead Man United back to the top of the Premier League table for the first time in more than two years earlier this season and has shown signs of finally building a title-winning side. His main focus will now be on Everton on Saturday, where three points are absolutely critical.
