Bebe: I was ‘shocked’ that Manchester United wanted to sign me

by Sid Choudhary

Former Manchester United striker Bebe has revealed that he was shocked when he learned that the club was interested in signing him.

The Portuguese forward signed for Man United in 2010 for £7m, joining from Vitória de Guimarães, a side in Portugal’s third division.

It was a shock that Sir Alex Ferguson allowed the club to spend so much money on a player he later admitted he had never seen play.

Unfortunately, Bebe’s time at United was a disaster. He made just two appearances in four years at the club, which included three different loan spells. It was a surprise when United signed Bebe and it was even more puzzling after fans had seen him play.

The 25-year-old was equally amazed by the move, as he told MailOnline: “It was a shock for me, too. For the week leading up to it, I thought the whole thing was a joke. I thought they were leading me on.

“Then I realised it was serious. I was surprised. I was playing in the third division in Portugal and all of a sudden one of the world’s biggest clubs wanted me? That’s not very normal. I remember my team-mates and family calling and asking me “What’s going on? Is it for real?”

Bebe has to go down as one of the worst transfers in football history, especially considering the club he came from and the money involved. It will forever remain a mystery to United fans why their club wasted so much money on a player that was evidently not cut out for the Premier League.
