Rojo started at left-back for Man United and had one of his best games in a red shirt. The 25-year-old even notched an assist, when his perfect cross fell right onto the head of Herrera, who nodded past Tim Howard to put United 2-0 ahead.
The full-back dealt well with the threat of the pacy Aaron Lennon on Everton’s right-hand side and was quick to offer his support to Anthony Martial ahead of him. Herrera was delighted with his teammate for his contribution to the Spaniard’s goal.
“It was a fantastic cross [for Herrera’s goal], I said thank you to him! I remember in one of my last games for Athletic Bilbao I scored my last goal for the club with a header against Sevilla. Scoring with a header is one of the things I like to do most, and in England even more.” Herrera told manutd.com.
The 26-year-old was one of the best players on the pitch at Goodison Park, bagging an assist for Wayne Rooney‘s strike as well as his own goal. It was a fantastic display from Herrera, who proved to Louis van Gaal why he should be starting every game.
It was a crucial win for United in their race for the title and they will turn their attention to Europe when they visit Moscow to face CSKA on Wednesday. Both Herrera and Rojo will hope that their impressive showings at Everton will put them in contention to a starting spot in Russia.
