Bayern Munich defender Philip Lahm has revealed why his former teammate Bastian Schweinsteiger chose to join Manchester United this summer.
Lahm and Schweinsteiger played together at Bayern for many years and won almost all there is to win, including the World Cup with their national team in the summer of 2014. It was a huge shock when Schweinsteiger chose to swap Bavaria for Manchester for most people but not for Lahm.
The 31-year-old came through the ranks with Schweinsteiger and admitted that the midfielder always wanted to play in the Premier League.
Lahm said: “Basti wanted a new challenge and I always had the feeling it was his dream to play Premier League football at some point in his life.
“It is going to be very good for him and Manchester United. You can rely 100% on Bastian. He is not someone that ever folds. Pressure, finals, title games — that is when he is best.
“Any team would benefit from him, he’s that kind of character.”
Man United fans are delighted that Schweinsteiger chose Old Trafford as his destination when deciding to come to England. He has had a stellar start to life at United, putting in some typically disciplined performances.
The World Cup winner is quickly becoming a fan favourite in Manchester, giving the fans the sort of player they have missed since the days of Paul Scholes. It is still early days in Schweinsteiger’s United career but if his start is anything to go by, many would definitely agree with Lahm that things are going to be very good for the midfielder and United.
