Manchester United fans still torn over Wayne Rooney despite goal against Everton

by Sam Peoples

Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney scored his first Premier League away goal in almost a year as he helped his side beat former club Everton 3-0 on Saturday.

Rooney returned to his old stomping ground needing a goal after another poor performance against Arsenal before the international break. England’s leading goalscorer was unavailable for his country for their European Championship qualifiers but he returned to action with a bang.

The 29-year-old has been coming under plenty of criticism for his displays as of late with just one goal in the Premier League before the Everton game. At it happened, his first away goal since Man United beat Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium last season helped the Reds wrap up a convincing victory.

United fans have been losing patience with Rooney and were still torn despite his goal against his old club:

Rooney is the type of striker who likes to go on scoring streaks. He couldn’t capitalise on his goal against Sunderland three weeks ago but will hope that the strike against Everton is the start of a good run. United have a difficult run of fixtures coming up and Rooney firing on all cylinders would be a huge lift.

The skipper will be looking for his first goal in the Champions League proper this season when his side travel to face CSKA Moscow on Wednesday. A win is crucial in a tight group and Rooney will want to build on his solid performance at Goodison Park.
