Louis van Gaal believes Marcos Rojo‘s got ‘great potential’ to become an important player for Manchester United and Wayne Rooney has also feels the same way about someone he considers a ‘fantastic player and team-mate.’
Rojo’s return to the side came against Everton at left-back and his impressive performance certainly hasn’t gone unnoticed among fans, players or evidently van Gaal himself.
If Luke Shaw was fully fit then Rojo probably wouldn’t be getting much of a look in this season but as it happens, the Argentinian may well end up being our first-choice left-back over the course of the season.
“I think there is great potential in him to become a very good player for Manchester United,” van Gaal told reporters in Moscow.
Rooney reiterated van Gaal’s point of view and said: “For me, he is a fantastic player and a fantastic team-mate. He is a player who is very tough to get around. For him to be from Argentina and play in the Premier League is not easy but he has done a great job. He will be a very important player for us for the rest of the season.”
High praise indeed from both Rooney and van Gaal for a player who has, up until this point, played very little football this season. In terms of boosting Rojo’s confidence, these words from United’s boss and captain should do a purpose and maybe that’s the intention.
At 25, we shouldn’t be talking about Rojo’s potential. Instead, we should be discussing how he is fulfilling that potential but maybe I’m just being harsh. Either way, it’s becoming quite clear that he’ll be United’s left-back this season until Shaw returns.
Against Everton, Rojo was very impressive so he’s shown that when on-form he can perform there and with this backing from both van Gaal and Rooney, that should give him the impetus to make that level of performance the norm.
