The left-back joined Man United last summer from Sporting Lisbon and enjoyed a good debut campaign under van Gaal which he continued into the summer with Argentina in their run to the 2015 Copa America finals.
This season, Rojo has been plagued by fitness and injury problems but returned against Everton at the weekend to put in a fantastic performance at left-back, much to the delight of van Gaal.
Speaking about Rojo, van Gaal praised his physicality as one of the main aspects which attracted him to sign him.
When asked why he signed Rojo, he said: “I didn’t know that he played for Spartak Moscow, but I saw him in the World Cup in Brazil when he played for Argentina very well. I analysed him at Sporting Lisbon. What I like is that he is physically a very strong guy, he is a good header and his pass is fast.”
There have been plenty of reports over the last couple of months about a tetchy relationship between van Gaal and Rojo but that been denied by the Argentinian, and van Gaal has never mentioned it himself.
Luke Shaw‘s injury has given Rojo an opportunity to show his worth this year and he obviously impressed enough to make van Gaal bring him to the club in the first place, so it’s about whether he can do the same again in Shaw’s absence to fill in at left-back.
