Louis van Gaal targets two more wins in the Champions League group stage

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal is backing his side’s home form to lead them into the last 16 of the Champions League.

Man United were held to a 1-1 draw away at CSKA Moscow on Wednesday and van Gaal admitted that he was happy to come away with a point. Man United will welcome both CSKA and PSV Eindhoven to Old Trafford over the next two months in a bid to reach the second stage of Europe’s elite competition.

United currently lie in second place in Group B, two points behind Wolfsburg, who the Reds still need to visit having beaten them 2-1 at Old Trafford.

Van Gaal is confident that his players can get the job done in their remaining two home games.

Speaking after the game, the manager told manutd.com: “I have said already yesterday that I would be happy with a draw. That is because I know we have two home matches, and we are very strong at home. So I hope that we can win these games, and then we are nearly qualified or we are already qualified depending on other results.”

United are still on track to qualify from their group but will know that the home games against the Dutch and Russian domestic champions are must win games.

Van Gaal added: “I think we are on schedule, despite the defeat against PSV, which I still think was a little strange. I don’t have to describe that defeat.”

Having worked themselves back into the Champions League by finishing fourth in the Premier League last year, United will want to get as far in the competition as they can. A European run would do wonders for a lot of the younger players in the squad and can help set the team up nicely for a proper go at the trophy next year.
