Former Manchester United defender Gary Pallister has warned supporters not to get too carried away with new striker Anthony Martial, despite how good he is.
The Frenchman has been a revelation since signing for Man United on deadline day from Monaco, scoring five goals in his first nine appearances for the club. He has been likened to all sorts of players such as Thierry Henry and Nicolas Anelka but Pallister wants United fans to remain calm over their new star.
There is no doubting Martial’s talent as he has shown on numerous occasions since he has joined United just how good a player he is. However, high expectations and comparisons with former successful players can only put pressure on the youngster, something Pallister is wary of.
“It’s really exciting to see a young player come into the team and have an immediate impact but we saw that a couple of seasons ago with Januzaj where we all went on about him being the new Ryan Giggs or the next Georgie Best,” Pallister said.
“In the early part of his career he took Manchester United by storm but he’s flat-lined since then so you’ve got to be really careful when you throw all these accolades at young players.”
“Martial has pace and at times he can destroy people with that pace. That excites people and gets fans on the edge of their seats while putting the fear of God into defenders.
“So he has all the attributes to be a star player but he’s just starting out in the game.”
It is interesting to see Pallister compare Martial to Adnan Januzaj, rather than an already established star. It is an indication that he thinks it is crucial that United fans do not expect too much from Martial, as they might have done for Januzaj when he first broke into the first team.
The 19-year-old has not even been at Old Trafford for two months, yet is already one of the most important players in the squad. United will want to keep their feet on the ground as far as Martial is concerned and allow him to develop into the best player he can possibly be.
